Katharine McPhee’s LP: A Little Bit Pussycat Dolls, A Little Bit Mariah

Lyrics won’t reveal much about her private life, says ‘Idol’ runner-up.

by Corey Moss
Type "katharinemcphee.com" into your Web browser and it’s instantly clear the "American Idol" runner-up is over "Over the Rainbow." First, the "Wizard of Oz" line "We’re not in Kansas anymore" appears on the screen, then the words raise up to reveal a shot of McPhee that’s more wicked witch — or at least wicked sexy — than Dorothy.
"It’s a really great thing," a grinning McPhee said of her image makeover. "Love that song, it’s been a great run, but it’s time to put it down" (see "Katharine McPhee Eyes Acting, Goes ‘Over The Rainbow’ With Debut"). In fact, when McPhee’s record label announced plans to include her signature song from "Idol" on her upcoming debut album, the singer replied, "No you’re not." "That doesn’t go with the record at all," she told MTV News recently.

During her "Idol" run, McHaters implied McPhee’s greatest downfall was overconfidence, but her strong sense of self is also her greatest strength as the 22-year-old Los Angeles native sets out to transition that fame into a career.

"The one thing you learn about ‘Idol’ is that you have to be really tough," McPhee explained. "You learn how to be a powerful businesswoman right away, and I have gotten really strong about what I want and what I don’t. And, for me, it’s fun because it’s me against all the guys."

What McPhee doesn’t want is to be rushed. While debut "Idol" albums are typically released at the end of the same year as the finalists’ "Idol" season and subsequent tour, she’s been vocal about pushing her LP to 2007. A release date has yet to be confirmed for her debut.

"The most important thing is making it the record that is really me," McPhee said. "I think people didn’t know what I was going to be. Was I going to be the Celine Dion, the Barbra [Streisand] or the Pussycat Dolls?"

McPhee insisted she’s the same "classy Katharine" she was on "Idol," but called the new tunes a sort of combination of the three. "With everything I had to deal with [during the tour] with my voice being down, a broken foot and all of that stuff, it was nice to take time to really think about what I wanted to do," she said. "I was getting submitted a lot of songs that just weren’t right and I didn’t think I could make them mine, so it’s been taking a little bit more time. So now we’ve been building the songs like how you would if you were making a record if you weren’t on ‘Idol’ and you would take five months. It’s been a cool creative experience for me. I’m really a songwriter and I’m learning from the best people in the business."

Those people include Babyface and songwriter Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff), as well as less predictable names like Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and Timbaland’s production partner, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills, who worked on Justin Timberlake’s "My Love" and Nelly Furtado’s "Promiscuous."

"I don’t know if we have the actual club record yet, but we definitely have some stuff you can dance to and I can move my booty to just a little bit," McPhee said. "I went to Boston Conservatory for musical theater and I was buddies with all the guys across the street at Berklee College of Music, and they were all the beat guys — they played the keys and that was the stuff I improvised with.

"If people are surprised with the sound that I come out with, it’s because they get to see a side that already existed but wasn’t really shown as much because I was always so nervous on ‘Idol,’ " she continued. "But yeah, I think it’s a little more edgy, a little more current. As Simon Cowell said in the first audition, ‘You’re very current.’ "

McPhee has yet to finalize the track list, but potentials include "Somehow," produced by Ryan Leslie (Cassie’s "Me & U"), the DioGuardi-penned power ballad "Home" and "We Got Each Other," a mid-tempo number that reminds McPhee of Mariah Carey’s "We Belong Together." "Neglected," which McPhee co-wrote, is also a likely keeper, as is the girls’ anthem "Open Toes." "It might be the new ‘Thong Song,’ " she said, laughing.

Lyrically, McPhee said not to expect an open journal into her life. "I’m not going to write a song about ‘Daddy, you really hurt me,’ like, I’m not going to go into complete details of my personal life," she said. "I think people know that I haven’t had the most perfect life. Obviously I wouldn’t have had an eating disorder or things like that. But we all have issues, we all have things that we deal with and overcome."

Fans should also not expect McPhee’s confidence to carry over into a Kanye West-like media campaign. "I just try to keep things in perspective," she said. "If I don’t have a hit record then I’ll try the record thing again and try the movie thing. And then [if those don't work] I’ll just get knocked up and be a happy married woman."

New Release Date

November 29th, 2006

Okay so yesterday I was extremely pissed off that Katharine’s Debut Album was moved from Dec. 19th to the 30th of January 2007. Now I have to wait for like 2 months in order to get her album! It sucks so bad because I freaking HATE to WAIT! I’m not at all that patient… But after reading some of the things that people said on the boards, I actually felt relieved that they moved the release date. It would give them time to re-schedule all of her appearances and hopefully by next year, I get to see Kat every week on T.V promoting her new album! (They better be promoting her like crazy or I’ll knock them all dead! Well not really, LOL!)

The only thing I’m dissapointed now is that it’s pretty much a guarantee that she won’t make it to the Megan Mullaly show! Which I was able to get tickets for the Dec. 15th show (The day that she’s supposed to be on)… But now she won’t be there. Now that SUCKS!

Oh well! Guess I’ll just get tickets again for next year then!

Debut4Don’t forget! Katharine’s Debut Album will be released on January 30, 2007 (Let’s just hope it stays that way)

I’ve never seen so many stars in my entire life!

November 20th, 2006

The moment I arrived here in the US I always wanted to meet some stars/celebrities up close. But I never really had the chance to. Except for attending one of the American Idol Concerts, I did get to see my favorite idol, Katharine McPhee perform live.

However, after what happened last night, I feel like I’m still living in a dream.

Well as you all know, I’m a huge fan of Katharine so when I heard that she would be performing at "The Grove Tree Lighting Spectacular" I decided to go. There were a lot of other artists as well like Jojo, Five for Fighting, The Cast of Highschool Musical, etc…

So obviously I was so excited! This would be my very first time watching the Tree lighting event.

We got there at around 4:35 PM and the show starts at around 7:00 PM. By the time we arrived, there were already a ton of people and the parking lots were almost full. We settled in near the stage, but it was hard to stay put cause the security staff was ushering people out. They said that we weren’t allowed to be there till 5:30. But obviously we didn’t listen.

Kat_at_the_grove_037 During that time Jojo was on stage rehearsing her performance! She was singing her hit single "Too Little Too Late" and I have to say the girl can sing! It really is different when you hear them sing LIVE!

Everything was just so SURREAL! There were cameras everywhere! A Teleprompter, The production crew, it was just a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to see how they tape these kind of shows because this is the kind of career that I want to have. Well hopefully.

Kat_at_the_grove_042 After Jojo rehearsed, The cast of Highschool Musical was next. There was only three of them, Ashley Tisdale, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu. At that moment all I can say is "OMG! It’s Ashley Tisdale! I so love her at the "That so suite life of zack and cody" (But not too much of her singing) and she was right there! Right there in front of me! (Not that close though, but I can see her perfectly!)

Okay so next was John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting. Not that I really care about him. I just wanted to get it over with and start the damn showw! We’ve already waited for like 3 hours just standing there doing nothing. My feet was tired, My back was aching, I felt like I had a headache as well and it was so friggin’ HOT! So yeah that was a nightmare.

After a few minutes before the show, they finally allowed us to sit down in the red carpet thing. I immediately rushed in so I could get a good view of the stage. We sat at about 3 or 4 rows behind but we still are very close to the stage. Finally we were able to sit down. Then there was this announcer and told us the details about the show. It will air on Dec. 2 on CBS channel 2 at 7:00 PM.

I think you guys know by now… I’m going to be shown on TV! LOL! Holy crap! Can you believe that? This is so FREAKING AWESOME! But at the same time I felt stupid because I looked ridiculous! Haha! Who cares though, I’m going to be on national tv! Bleh! Hehe!

So it’s SHOW TIME.

Kat_at_the_grove_046 The first performers to open the show was Aly and Aj. I had no idea that they were going to be there, So I screamed! When they got on stage I screamed a lot louder! And I’m not even a huge fan of the both of them, but I was just so happy to see a lot of stars that night! Again I was like "OMG! OMG! That’s Aly and Aj! They were standing there right on stage and waiting for their cue. First they had to shot some audience reactions first and then on with their performance. (You have no idea how many times they had make us "applaud")

So Aly and Aj performed their own Christmas song called "The Geatest Time Of Year" which is the motion picture soundtrack of the new disney movie called "Santa Caluse 3: The Escape Clause" And well they were really good. I’m actually surprised that Alyson Michalka (The one of Phil of The Future) sang so good. I always thought that her other sister was the better singer, but I guess I was wrong. They did an awesome job! I totally enjoyed their performance!

After that it was another break and I have no idea who the next performers were. So I don’t need to mention it. I’ll just mention the one’s that I still remember. LOL!

But first here are the list of celebrities that were there that night (That I got see that is! *wink*)

Aly and Aj

Jojo

Beverly Mitchell (Seventh Heaven)

Wilmer Valderama and The cast of the new movie called "Unaccompanied Minors"

Elmo (Like that matters! LOL!)

Brian McKnight and his sons

Lisa Rina (Dancing with the Stars)

Drew Lachey (Dancing with the Stars)

Lance Bass

Five For Fighting

Jesse Mccartney

Ashley Tisdale

Monique Coleman

Corbin Bleu

Morgan Fairchild

And of course, KATHARINE MCPHEE!

Kat_at_the_grove_054 So now I’ll go with Jojo’s performance. She wore white during rehearsals but now she wore a dress. She still sang "Too Little Too Late" as she did during the rehearsals earlier. I really loved that song, but I think now that her performance was just average. She was kinda lost when she song the high "Yeah" part.. But I think it was still okay. She was good.

Kat_at_the_grove_049 Then there was Brian McKnight with his two sons and elmo.. LOL! They sang "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" One of my favorite christmas songs. It was great! I always loved Brian McKnights voice! Not so much of Elmo though, Hahaha!

Okay so who else? Ummm.. Oh right, Five for Fighting. He sang "Silent Night" also one of my favorite songs. And I really loved that song arrangement. He’s voice was awesome as well!

Katharine_up_close_007_0001 Now finally it’s Katharine’s turn. I have no idea what she would sing that night and I hoped to God that it isn’t SOTR cause I’ve already heard that songs a couple of times already. I’m dying to hear her sing a Christmas song! And well I totally got what I wanted, even much better!

She started at the back and started walking towards the stage.. And she started singing the lines "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire", I totally FLIPPED OUT! That is my favorite christmas song of all time! and she’s singing it! I totally got what I wanted! Gosh, this is the most AMAZING and EXCITING experience EVER! Oh and did I mention how Beautiful she looked? (Although I always say that) But really, I was like "Wow". Totally STUNNING!

Katharine_up_close_001_0006 And her performance… Well let’s just say she NAILED IT! The girl’s got SOUL! I absolutely LOVED her performance! (I’m not being biased here) I believe everyone in that crowd would totally agree!  Everyone was screaming for her!

Oh and that’s not the end of it. After a couple of minutes she went back on stage again, getting ready for her next part. And Kat looked so CUTE. She was so goofy. She talked to some of the audience (Both left and right) and then she’d go back at the center again and sing along with the song on the background. Then she’d swing her arms around and clap her hands, etc… So adorable!

Then there was this girl on the audience that she recognized and she was like "Carmen! Carmen! Where’s your mom?" she asked. I have no idea what the girl said back but Kat had place both her hands on her hips and has this "Oh no you didn’t" look on her face. It was so funny! She’s so down-to-earth.

Alright so anyways, I’ll end it here. The night ended with the Tree Ligthing with some FIREWORKS and artificial SNOW. WhooHoo!

Oh and by the way, I got to shake Jesse Mccartney’s hand! For Real! I also got uplcose with Aly and Aj and then with Jojo. It was the coolest thing ever! Although I didn’t get to meet Kat, but that’s fine. I’ll get my chance some day.

That would be it then.. I’ll post some links to the videos..

The Day I Turned 18

November 5th, 2006

When I woke up that morning, I didn’t feel like it was in fact my 18th birthday. For me it was just like any other day, the only difference is that I’ll be getting lots of gifts and greetings from my family and friends. (It’s why I love birthdays! LOL!) But it’s not like I’m complaining or anything. In fact, I was happy. Both my mom and dad greeted me at the struck of midnight. And I have to say, It was so obvious that they were on to something that night. Haha! I was on the computer at around 11:30 pm or something and then they both woke up and got out of the room. I kept wondering why it took them so long to get back inside and so that’s when I realized that they’re going to greet me now.

And so I turned the computer off and climbed up to bed. It’s not like I did it on purpose though, I was sleepy as hell! After a couple of minutes, the door opened and they sang ‘Happy Birthday’. My dad was holding a small cake with lit candles and my mom brought a wine glass and my favorite brand of ‘Vanilla Cream’ drink (I would have preferred a Root Beer though, but whatever)

I would’ve cried at that precise moment but I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to cry and ruin the moment. Instead I smiled and just took it in. I wanted to remember this moment for the rest of my life. It wasn’t sort of spectacular but it was something SPECIAL for me. The only thing missing in that almost ‘picture perfect’ portrait was having both my brother and sister in it.

The next day, I mean that morning we were heading to this place called "The Castle" a Korean BBQ restaurant together with my mom, dad, great grandmother and great grandfather. But before that we dropped by at the church and bid our prayers. After that we took some pictures as a little remembrance and headed to my favorite restaurant.

After that we just drove around the city and ummmm I forgot where we went. But whatever, I’m contented after eating Korean BBQ. (^^,) Oh I think we bought some ingredients for my party on Saturday.

Anyways if you’re wondering what I really did to celebrate my birthday then okay I’ll tell you. Last thursday (The week before my birthday) I went over to Sam’s house and had a sleepover at their place. It was fun hanging out with Sam and her sisters and brother and cousin. Lol.

We went out and watched a movie called "Running with Scissors" It was a memoir of a certain author and it was supposed to be a comedy. The movie was weird, like so weird. There were some parts that were funny but after that it’ll be weird again. I didn’t get the movie at all. Haha!

So anyways, despite the weird movie, I still had a ton of fun.

My 18th birthday wasn’t all that grand and spectacular but I am contented. In fact there’s no need for it. As long as my Family and Friends are with me, then that’s good enough.

I’m happy. So happy.

2006 Carousel of Hope Ball

October 28, 2006

Beverly Hilton

Well what can I say, she looks absolutely AMAZING. But then again, she always do. *sticks out tongue*

The ball was for a charity event, benefiting diabetes and honoring Quincy Jones and Clive Davis.

There was a lot of A-listers at this event including Halle Barry, Sharon Stone, Teri Hatcher, Hilary Duff, The Hilton Sisters (Duh? It’ stheir Hotel), etc… Also performances by Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Barry Manilow and our very own Katharine McPhee. 014

I think this is probably the very first "BIG" event she has ever attended ever since she got off American Idol.

This totally proves that Katharine is headed for bigger and brighter things. I mean, If you take a look at all the success that she’s had so far… The Duet with Bocelli, Her 2.5 Million Sexy Hair Deal, Cover of Teen People, Featured in OK Mag, etc…

And that’s just in after what? 2 weeks after American Idol season 5 ended. I mean, she got all that media attention and to think that hasn’t even put out an album yet. It’s crazy really!

864865

Okay so down to her performance. She was supposed to be singing her signature song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" but when they realized that Whitney Houston was coming (It’s a big deal now cause it’s her very first appearance since the break-up) they changed it to "I Have Nothing".

On a side note: Clive was the one who asked Kat to sing that song.

The funny thing here was that, Randy Jackson (One of the AI Judges) was there at that event as well. And when Katharine sang "I Have Nothing" on Idol he said that the song was too big for her and that she’s trying to prove that she’s better than Whitney. (Yeah right, jack ass!)

5248

However, Katharine nailed the song again and guess what? Whitney Houston led the standing ovation and later on said to Kat that she was very proud of her. Haha! In your FACE Randy! Mwahaha! Now how cool is that? I mean come on! It’s Whitney Houston for crying out loud! and that is such a huge accomplishment! Whoohoo!

This is one crazy week for us Kat Fans! Haha! Truly awesome! Now if only she could give us her new single now… and then later on her album. Can’t wait!

Oh and we tried to pass by Beverly Hilton last Satruday hoping to see a glimpse of Kat. Nyahaha! But I guess we were too late. Then again the pink carpet is held inside so I doubt that I could catch a glimpse. Oh well… Someday I might just see her. I will try and go to that Megan Mullaly show and hopefully I can get tickets for it. So anyways, that’s it for now. Chao!

Katharine is such a DORK!

October 28th, 2006

Laughing Out Loud

But in a ‘CUTE and ADORABLE’ way of course! So here’s what happened on Thursday. I was browsing the different forums and then I came across a thread that’s entitled: "Is this for Real?" so I click on it and read that Katharine wrote a message for all of her fans from a random fansite called: Katharine-McPhee.Net in that little "chatterbox" thingy. It was kinda weird because KMF (KatharineFans.com) is like the official forum/site that sends out messages from Kat herself. (She is in contact with the Website owner named Chad)

Obviously, I was very skeptical about it because almost anyone can pull a stunt like that. I mean, who’s going to believe that someone with a username like "Katharine McPhee" really is Katharine McPhee in a random fansite. LOL!

Anyways here’s what she said:

katharine mcphee: Hi everyone…yes it is me. I have been trying to post a note to all my fans katharinefans without having Chad responsible posting it for me. This is the best way for me to post something easily wit

katharine mcphee: out racking my brain. I’m not very good at the computer stuff. But I just wanted to say hello to all of you and I have been having an amazing time working on the record. Just the people alone workin

katharine mcphee: g on the record is amzing and so again thank you all so much for all you help and patience during this down time of my presence. I’m in sitting in a studio right now working with Ryan Leslie…Really

katharine mcphee: a great guy and having fun working on this tune. I am back to LA on Saturday for the carousel Ball. I get to sing for all the big people . Ha…like Quincy Jones and Clive to benefit diabetes. Lots

katharine mcphee: more coming and can’t wait to get out there for you all.

katharine mcphee: If someone can spread this message to the rest of the fans I would really apprieciate it. XXX oh and by the way my new puppy’s name is Nena. She is really sweet and she goes everywhere with me!!
26 Oct 06, 16:42

Base on all those "TYPOS" it does seems like her because it’s one of her habits. Haha! Plus, how can someone have all of those sources/information? If it wasn’t her and it was all a prank, then someone must’ve done a great deal of research.

The Carousel Ball is indeed true and is one of the three biggest events held in Hollywood. A lot of A-listers will be appearing on this charity event down in Beveryly Hilton Hotel.

Ryan Leslie is another music producer who has worked with Jojo, Britney, Cassie, etc…

And about the new puppy, she was seen at the LAX airport carrying a chihuahua with her. (We have the same breed of dog, haha!) Nena seems like a pretty name. Heehee! I think it’s from the movie Peter Pan? Nyahaha! Nena!

Later on, it was confirmed that it was indeed her.

After learning that, I was like ‘WTF?’ that girl is such a DORK! I was like cracking up! I mean, ‘Kat! You have a MySpace for crying out loud! Use it!’ It was just so RANDOM and ODD. Gotta love Katharine McPhee!

Oh and another funny thing was that she was on KMF but she didn’t know how to post. LOL! and she went to the "LiveChat" thing but no one was there. Haha! Somehow I feel sorry for her but at the same time you can see how much she loves her fans. She’s like the most sincere and down-to-earth person ever!

But seriously! I should’ve gone to the LiveChat more often! although, I’m not so sure if I’m going to believe that I really am talking to Katharine McPhee. Nyahaha! :p

Oh Kat! Next time, learn how to use your Myspace! LOL!

Make way for the McPheever!

October 26th, 2006

I can’t believe I just posted three entries yesterday, LOL! Must be one heck of a day for me. Haha! In fact I was bored out to death! But anyways, you guys better be ready cause it’s time for another McPheever Mania! *jumps up and down with joy*

I think it’s time to set your TIVO’s on! Well I don’t have one but I have a TV guide so it’s all good. Plus, even if I miss one (which I doubt will happen) there’s always someone out there who can give us a download link to it. Hahaha! *big grin* It pays off having a High Speed Internet and a 160 GB Hard Drive. Mwahahaha!

That’s all of the list so far, I’m sure more will come. But this is so cool! Kat is going to be one of the presenters in the Billboard Music Awards! I’m so looking forward to that! Woohoo! Now I’m curious about the Thanksgiving Parade, I pray to God that she’s doing that in LA so I can go and see her! If it’s in New York then that’s not good. Hopefully it’ll be here cause I think Jay Leno’s studio is down here in LA. *crosses fingers*

The only thing left is that she releases her single by next week, just in time for my bday! Yeah! I hope so! Seriously that’s all I want for my bday! Oh please let it be out by next week!

Okay so that’s all for now. Chao!

Katharine McPhee’s Debut Album

October 25th, 2006

Album_covernot_official Katharine McPhee

The Debut Album (Untitled Still)

In Stores on Nov. 28

A little reminder, this picture is not the actual Album Cover. This is merely a temporary picture that Amazon put up on their site. (They should have at least tried making it a little glamorous, but oh well Kat is still stunning in that picture)

Oh that picture is taken from her US Weekly Photoshoot where she had a green dress on. So obviously it’s not it. I’m sure RCA can afford to have a seperate photoshoot for her album.

You can Pre-Order her album on Amazon.com

I’ll provide you with the link: Katharine McPhee’s Debut Album (Pre-Order Now)

Unfortunately we have no idea what her album is going to be like. "Her Lips are Sealed" Hahaha! and to be quite honest I’m so sick of all this waiting! I’m dying to know what her album is going to sound like! Damn you McPhee! Why do you have to be such a tease?! LOL! Kidding!

But of course we have some tiny bit of information regarding her album and who’s working with her. In a recent article in Rolling Magazine they mentioned that Nate Hills a.k.a Danja, a music producer, is working with Katharine with her album. If you’re not familiar who Nate Hills is, he is one of the hit makers in today’s music. He’s the same producer who produced "SexyBack" and Promiscious" both of which have climbed at the top of the Billboard Chart.

If you look in Nate Hills’ current projects, Katharine is listed among them. Here’s a link to it: Nate Hills’ Projects

There’s also a rumor that Timbaland (Also one of the hottest producers in the music industry) is working with Kat too on her album. Although we don’t know about this one. Nate Hills and Timbaland sometimes collaborate with each other so what we are trying to figure out if Hills is working solo with Kat or a collaboration with Timbaland or either yet Tim working solo with Kat as well. I can’t say much about this rumor, this is just a speculation until confirmed by Kat’s management or herself.

Here’s the article to the Teen People article: Teen People

She’s also included in the "8 Must Have Albums in the Fall"

I think that’s all of the information I’ve got. Looking at these, I think Kat might go with R&B/HipHop, or somewhere along the lines of Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake. But who knows for sure. Most of Nate Hill’s works are HipHop but he is a diversed songwriter/producer. So I’m not really sure. Maybe she’s going for edgy pop or something. All we can do is guess.

I really am looking forward for her CD. It seems that she’s working with the right people. If she goes with a Nelly Furtado route then that would be great because in today’s world, that’s a hit selling album.

What Hurts The Most

October 25th, 2006

By: Rascal Flatts

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don’t bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok
But that’s not what gets me

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was tryin’ to do

It’s hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I’m doin’ It
It’s hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I’m alone
Still Harder
Getting up, getting dressed, livin’ with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

Not seeing that loving you
That’s what I was trying to do

A little piece of advice for everyone out there. If you want to say something to the person close to your heart, say it now before it’s too late. Don’t hide it, just let it go. There’s no point in keeping it to yourself. It’ll only cause you more pain. More importantly, be true to yourself.

In that way, you’ll never regret anything in the end.
